Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee began as an online series on Crackle and is now streamed on Netflix, where its tenth season recently aired. Seinfeld’s roving talk show combines coffee, laughs and vintage cars into quirky, caffeine-fueled adventures with the sharpest minds in comedy. The success of the show is partly due to its simple format: two comics in a car conversing over coffee.
Seinfeld has taken Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Judd Apatow, Larry David, Tina Fey and Ellen DeGeneres, among others, on coffee dates in classic cars. He even drove Barack Obama around the White House.
Each classic car, like each conversation, is matched to the guest. The blue ’76 Lamborghini Countach for Jim Carey, the Mercedes 280 SL for Alec Baldwin. With Stephen Colbert he riffs about masculinity and with Ali Wentworth he banters on about the art of winning a fight. The shows are filmed at pre-selected restaurants.
Seinfeld ran for 15 years, starting in 1989. The Emmy-nominated Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee premiered in 2012 and is still going strong. The series, despite its seeming irreverence, portrays the comedic maestro’s talent as he shares the mobile stage with his humorist peers, in a feel-good, witty second act.
“Nobody enjoys the ‘little show about nothing’ humor more than me, but that is never the way I look at it.” – Jerry Seinfeld
