 ARCHITECTURE
KengoKuma
Knows No Bounds
Renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s creative potential knows no bounds. Adding to his eclectic, international portfolio, Kuma’s grandest undertaking to date is Tokyo’s 68,000-
seat New National Stadium.
Inaugurated in December 2019, this striking, low-rise structure features open-air columns and a half-covered roof constructed of latticed wooden beams.
Kuma’s inspiration for the Stadium drew from natural elements, such as wind and light, with a nod to Japanese culture. That same esthetic, in a variety of iterations, can be found in anything he touches.
Widely regarded as Kuma’s chef-d'oeuvre was 2018’s resplendent V&A museum in Dundee, Scotland, whose façade of cantilevered concrete slabs pays homage to Scotland’s windswept cliffs.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Kuma spent 2019 on projects small and large, each reflecting an innovative approach to design that has captivated the world.
